Possible that your fuel anti fire solenoid on the bottom of carb is stuck in open position.
Nothing to do with mixture.

Shut the throttle down to low idle before shutting down the engine .

Also - because ethanol is SO bad and attracts water - I have a fuel shut off in the line - shut the fuel off and drive to the barn - by the time I get the the tractors parking space the carb is out of fuel - just remember to turn the key off after the engine stalls.

Sure sounds like you have that timed just right

you can test to see if your fuel solenoid is functioning by disconnecting it from the carb. Ground it to the engine then turn the key. The plunger should retract then slide back out when you turn the key to the off position.

I checked the solenoid. it is not functioning. will try to find a new one and reply with the results.

Note:
I noticed that the plug that plugs into the bottom of the solenoid is rounded on one side and not the other as if it should only be hooked up one way, but the solenoid itself will accept it either way. should it be hooked up one way or the other? I tried it both ways with the same results just didn't want to ruin a new one.

Reversing the connection won't hurt anything but why would you want to if the plug only goes in one way?
