Req help... small generator won't run.

Hello,

I have very little mechanical knowledge, so I'm looking for some help. I have a small HF Champion 800w 2HP two stroke generator that won't run. I ran it dry at the end of the season, but recently got some new storage advice I followed, which was spraying a small amount of Stabil fogging oil in the the crank case and storing it with treated fuel (Stabil and Seafoam mix). Unfortunately, now it won't start (I already know... if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!)

It will run if I continuously spray the same mixture I put in the fuel tank directly into the carb, so I assume the mixture and the spark are good. I pulled the carb and cleaned it. I removed the fuel needle but not the jets, so maybe they're clogged. however, the generator only has about 4 hours of total run time on it and it was running when I put it away, so I don't know.

The longest it had it running was after I removed the gas cap (post carb cleaning), but that was only for 10 seconds. So, it didn't run... I cleaned the carb... pulled the starter cord a few times and it failed to start... removed the fuel cap and it ran for about 10 secs (with spaying a little fuel in the carb to get started).

Additionally, I know the fuel lines aren't blocked because I pulled the bowl and manipulated the float, which cause the fuel to flow.

Like I said, I know VERY little but I'm stuck on what to try next.

Any advise is greatly appreciated!! - Rick

I would check to see if fuel is coming from tank to the carb, fuel lines/filter/etc.

If you're sure gas is getting to the bowl, then it sounds like a blocked jet.

Thanks for the replies!

The fuel line does not appear blocked and there's no fuel filter. Here's a link to the assembly diagram.

It's hard to believe those jets could be blocked, considering this thing is still like new, but I guess I can pull them out and attempt to clean them (I didn't want to take the carb down any further than I had too so I wouldn't run into any reassembly problems).

Here's a couple of pics of the carb.

take lots of pics during disassembly and go easy on gaskets,

So, after letting the engine sit a couple days I gave it a pull and it started right up; however, now it's surging and shutting off after about 20 seconds (I've attached a video). I can keep it running by opening and closing the choke, so does this confirm the carb/jets are dirty?

Also, not sure if this mean anything, but I've noticed a small drip of oil the last couple times I worked with this engine. I inspected the area and it looks like it's coming from the bottom of the muffler (unknown exactly where).

It is probably not oil but dirty gas. To much fuel getting through carb I think your carb needs a very good cleaning. Check the oil make sure there is no gas in it

Sorry, I made that confusing. It's a two stroke, so it's definitely the fuel/oil mixture. It just seems very dark and thick. I'm just curious why it's coming from the bottom of the muffler.

could the carburetor nettle valve be sticking, I have seen it before on two cycle engines.

Is what of seems like seems like the fuel isn't getting shut off all the way and that drip of oil is actually fuel oil mix running through the muffler getting more dirty creating a black look to it. 2 stroke carbs are really hard to clean without an ultra sonic cleaner ( I am going to buy one this year) so as of now I just replace the 2stroke carbs have you priced a replacement on it? If you decide to replace I recommend 2 things a fuel shut off valve and run it dry. And a little stabolizer in the fuel and run it regularly every 2-3 weeks for about 5-10 mins get that fuel flowing through the carb sitting gas is no good for anything

Not sure, but I'm reading about this problem to determine if this could be the issue (not sure how to diagnose this problem yet).

I actually used an ultra sonic cleaner but didn't remove the jets.

I guess I need to remove the jets and brush them clean. I'll probably do that next week (I've spent a lot of time and effort on this $80 HF generator).
