The deck on mine is beyond repair at this point, and I found a deck 100 miles away for 50 bucks... It is off a Toro 14-38HXL. Is this compatible? What is the difference between an XL and an HXL? i'm assuming the 12- and 14- is the motor size, and wouldn't matter? Many thanks for all answers

One has a Hydro and one has gears.
Yes 12 , 14 are the engine sizes
Correct , won't make a difference to the deck.
Good luck.
They are old decks so check everything that pivots for being flogged out.

main difference will be pulley size if they are both 38" decks.
The only place you will come into trouble if they have different PTO's
The manual PTO will have a swinging idler pulley to tighten the belt to engage the blades and usually a brake to put a heavy load on the belt when you disengage so the belt slips.
On electric PTO's the tensioning pulley will be on a spring with no mechanism for moving it and there usually is no brake .
However the pressings are the same. it is just the bolt on bits that are different.

If your deck is just rusted out then this won't matter because you can just swap over parts.
Worse case is some might be welded on but normally the welded on bits are all the same because it make manufacture a lot cheaper this way.

Bert is hitting it squarely on the head. Follow his advise and you will have your unit up and running again.
