I have a 6HP Yardman with a Briggs & Stratton self starting with a push button to start it. I have had this at least 20 years. It does not have a battery or electric starter. This kind of starter was discontinued about 15 years ago. I always take care of my yard equipment. I loaned this to my nephew a few years back and he brought it back in terrible shape. I guess most would say throw it out but I like to fix things and I want to get this back in running shape. I have repaired a lot of starters, autos & lawn tractors & push mowers but not this thing. The part that starts the engine sits on the block next to the flywheel. It has a gear on it that engages the flywheel. It has another smaller wheel that goes against the flywheel on the side when you pull the starting rope. The engine does not turn when the rope is pulled, only the wheel that charges the starter. It builds up pressure as you pull the rope. I don't know if its air that builds up or it tightens a spring. After that you press the starter button and the engine starts. As the engine runs it keeps the starter charged. It can sit for a few days and will start by just pushing the start button. Any help on this will be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like a recoil trip starter.
There is a spring in there that evntually breaks.
Also a pair of plastic pawls then also break.
Same story go the the briggs web site / customer support / manuals.
Type in your model & code then download your parts book.
All pretty strait foreward.

Thanks for the quick reply. I had 49 views with no response. Probably not to many know what the selfstarter is. That is why I messaged you. You have helped me a lot in the past. I knew you would know what I was talking about. Thanks again, your friend Cambre
