Rectifier Voltage Regulator Hunt

I have my father in law's wonderful 1984 Troy-Bilt Horse tiller. Continues to run like brand new. My problem is the battery is not charging. I get 20+ volts from the stator but no charge at the battery and no output from the rectifier. Only id on the rectifier is Tympaniumcorp; no numbers. My search says it's #41 403 07-S. It's a 4 wire rectifier. Can't find one anywhere, any ideas on a compatable replacement? Thank you!

41 403 07-S is discontinued. Either rewire to use the standard three wire regulator with its case grounded or use 17 403 07-S which may require rewiring too.

Here is the wiring for the 17 403 07-S Which is the 18 amp version.

Thank you! I found wiring harness 17 176 03-S appears to plug in to this regulator, then I can wire the other end to my original plug. The OEM regulators are so much more expensive than after market brands. Any I should stay away from?
 
Most mowers, vehicles and equipment of this era used Packard series 56 connectors. I buy them on eBay quite often.

That might help if you want things to look and work properly.
 
Need some more help please understanding the wiring. Three wires from the stator, two yellows & one black. Testing the two yellows gives me 20v AC at full throttle. Testing from either yellow to the black gets 1/2 the voltage (10v AC). I assumed this black wire would be the ground going to "D" in your earlier diagram. Ohm yellow to yellow is 3 ohms, either yellow to black is 1.6 ohm. Black to ground is open and yellows to ground are open. My original rectifier has two yellows and black going in,and the red going out to the battery. so, does the black lead go to "D" ground lead in the above diagram? Thanks for your help & patience!!

Bump - sorry to be a pest - trying to understand what to do with the 3rd black wire from the stator. Obviously not a ground as it has half the AC volts vs yellows. Maybe just tape it off? Would still like to know why it's there and what it did going to the original rectifier/regulator. I have no other accessories on this tiller that need power.

The manual only shows a 2-wire or a 4-wire stator. Someone could have changed the stator and installed a later one, but I am not familiar with a 3-wire stator design.

You may have to remove the flywheel to get an exact idea of where the wires originate.

Are you testing to the block with one meter lead when checking the black wire in question?
 
It is the common leg sort of like a neutral wire. To solve your problem try Googling "converting 41 403 07-S to three wire". It may explain how to make the conversion. I say may because there isn't one here for me to play with.
