I have a older craftsman lawn tractor model #917 254 850,trying to remove rear wheel the axle came out with it. what needs to be done to reinsert axle and secure it?

Without looking at what tranny you have, will assume gear drive. Remove the tranny from the tractor, split the transmission case, reinstall the missing snap ring or E clip. Reassemble and reinstall.
If you have a hydro, this job just got a lot worse.
And most important find the retainer inside the box before you button it back up.
It is a biggish job, but not a hard one.
The tranny has to come out so the entire mower needs to come apart.
Most likely you have a Peerless or Hydrogear tranny and both of them have full service manuals available on line for free download.
Biggest PIA is cleaning off the old sealant from the joining faces.
