I purchased a really nice YS4500 with no engine last year and temporarily powered it with a Kohler CV460S I had as a spare. It originally had a 21HP Briggs. The Kohler bolted and wired on with no modifications. After knowing there were no issues with the chassis I found a deal on a 331977 21HP Briggs on eBay for $405.00 delivered to my house. I'm not sure the exact model of the original Briggs but it all worked out great and I have a 2 year warranty. I hope this helps!

Thanks, did you use the Briggs muffler or the Kohler ie the one that came with the tractor. Did the YS throttle cable fit the Briggs. Ebay has the Briggd for $529 including shipping with a 2 year Warentee!

I was able to use the throttle cable, electrical connections and fuel line just as they were when it originally came with the Briggs. Seems as though they interchange with no modifications. As far as mufflers go, I had the muffler for the Kohler and when I purchased the tractor the PO has trashed the engine but gave me the original muffler from the factory Briggs. I used that one when I purchased the new (same HP) Briggs replacement.

I have a manual blade engagement on mine so I had no need for extra AMPS. The only other thing to consider and I am not familiar with all the years the YS4500 was made would be the location of the gas tank. If it is under the engine compartment you won't need a fuel pump. Otherwise if it is under the chassis you would need a fuel pump that works off the oil dipstick tube.

The seller I dealt with (smallenginesforless) has the link below and currently selling the 21HP for $479.00 with free shipping. Not a bad deal if you ask me. Over the early winter last year I saw the price drop to $369.00 with free shipping. As well both already know is pretty much a seasonal demand.

I mow about seven acres street frontage and around the house and orchard using three push mowers and 4 lawn tractors plus some gas trimmers. I'm trying to figure out why my Briggs and Straton sounds raw and throaty and my Kohler sounds kind of putt putt. I haven't considered swapping them out yet because I think both are still running fine...However...

The Kohler 16 HP in the yardman out performs the 19.5 HP MTD Gold with the Briggs and Straton but I can't get over the sound. To me the putt putt sounds funny. Am I imagining a problem that isn't really there?

I generally end up mowing longer wetter grass than I like because the lawn is growing throughout April and May mudtime and If I
just leave it be by the time its dry its 20" high and has tree shoots. The obvious answer is use a bigger machine, but aside from the cost I have to maneuver around a lot of trees and planting beds. If I just let the lawn go back to field in no time it would be a woodlot full of poplar and birch which I think of as basically weeds.

The mowers which are all older than dirt, (the newest is 2007) They get used hard and generally by June I have one or two down for maintenance changing belts and blades so with that background what am I hearing?
