I am thinking about putting in a rain barrel, looks like it may be a dry summer. Is there anything I should know before doing it? Do you have to buy the assembly. I have an old blue barrel, could I just use that?

We are using an old drum of some sort. We just put it under the eave on the shed out back. We use this water to water the garden and the flowers when it's really dry. I love that we aren't wasting water when it's a dry year.

Any container that is reasonably free of contaminants will work fine...
Years ago (many years ago) cisterns were common at almost all farms and even city homes. They were usually under ground chambers that collected rain runoff from roofs of homes and other buildings.

You don't need to make it a huge chamber and it needn't be underground. KennyV

Hi Yes that is for sure we had a cistern when i was a kid on the farm in the mid 50's and we lived thought it all fine , we had water hauled in ,our well would not keep up to the demand for livestock use and for the household use of water.
