Hello all, I am Tom.

I posted earlier today about my John Deere JS35.

It would appear a new mower would be a better choice then to repair the JS35. I have looked online and locally for a replacement, but it's a crap shoot making a decision. So here are some criteria, of which I would appreciate some educated suggestions.

Our yard is hilly but small, 1/2 acre. There are many trees and other obstacles on the property. When I was the one mowing, I wanted a self propelled (hence the JD). My wife has been mowing for the last year or so and would much rather a push only mower I'm not looking for the best and I'm not looking for a POS. I assume a 20" is best

I will most likely be purchasing via the web, as my area is not conducive to brand choices.

If you were by me I would say to take a strong look at a Toro model number 20381. Yes, I know it is a little pricy, but it will be the last mower you buy it maintained properly. I know that this unit is self propelled, but I have never had a better half not like it once they try it. My opinion, now we'll hear from the Honda guys who will give you a unit to compare it to. Only two I would even look at.

Agreed. Toro and Honda are the ones to look at.

I agree as well. Honda or Toro. In my opinion, there might be a time when you DO want self propel, so I would get one that is, personally. You can PUSH a self propel mower, but you can't use the self propel on a PUSH mower. For the Honda brand, I would recommend one of the HRR models. You probably don't want to spend the money for an HRX, but the HRR's are good mowers as well. Those or the nice Toro models.

I have reviewed these brands 'till I was blind:laughing: Pr icy the lot is.. but aren't they all now?

I found this little ditty that drew my ire, Cub Cadet SC 500 EZ. The zero turn seems to be a good idea for the obstacles we have. Can I have some fair opnion on this brand?

I failed to mention that our lawn is very VERY thick during the season, so more power the less the bog.

We owned a TORO prior to our JD... for 3 weeks! The TORO was awful. This was some 10 years ago, so maybe they have bettered themselves.

We use a Toro Time Master 30" walk behind. It is over a year old. We have replaced one idler on the belt tensioner and another one is starting to whine. I bought one to replace it today. Other than that we love it.

We very seldom go a day with out unloading it to do something. We use it to cut with discharge. We use it to mulch, and we use it to bag. It is a great machine or has been for us. If ours dies today I would replace it tomorrow.

Honda fan here. I have one I bought new in 2000 and it's still mowing today. I'm religious with maintenance on it but this thing has stood the test of time. I used it as a commercial mower during my 20's to make extra coin through college. Here we are 15 years later and on my 3rd home and this mower is still turning out yard of the month cuts and reliability. I wish this thing had an hour meter, I'd be curious to see how many hours I got logged on this thing! Enjoy.
