I have a 2002 troy bilt 54" 25hp riding mower and have been having problems with the drive belt, it started when I had to disassemble the tension springs to change the steering gears. When I put it back together the pedal felt normal but it was hard to get the mower to move, I would get it going as fast as possible and lock in the cruise, after about 4 cuts the belt starting smoking and mower quit moving, I replaced the belt with another oem belt and did the same thing after about 4 cuts. I tried moving the springs in different spots with no luck. I replaced the belt again yesterday and it would not even move the belt would just burn, im thinking I have another problem now instead of the springs, any suggestions?

Absolutely, bearings inside idler pulley's are worn out as well as pulleys possibly for drive belt assembly. It's always a good idea to remove & inspect idler pulleys & bearings when changing drive belt.

Click on first manual, then accept, download at bottom left of screen, see pages 34 & 35 items 5 & 43, it looks like you have three idler pulleys # 43. Also see page 22.

Unless you want to end up fixing every ones "pet problem" we will need more information.
Start with the model number of your Troy built.
This will allow us to dig out your parts diagram and see what is in your drive train.
Next drop the deck off, stand the mower up on its bum and take a couple of photos of the clutch area, brake on and brake off.
Post the photos and you will be mowing again by the weekend.

There was a good reason or asking you to stand the mower up and take photos.
I looked at them but they were way too fuzzy to notice anything other than the springs were anchored the wrong sides of the lever.
We need to be able to see almost the whole run of the belt in one frame in clear focus.
One with the clutch on
One with the clutch off.

I tried to stand it up but I dont know how, the main thing im looking for is where the springs are supposed to be, that was the biggest issue im having. Once I get the spring right I can go from their if their is an issue.
