Recently acquired a pp175g42 with manual shift transmission. Clutch is like a light switch, and I have to release it very gently or the mower will wheelie! Is there an adjustment for the clutch to minimize this?

Sounds like it has the wrong drive belt. It requires a fabric covered belt designed for clutching applications OEM belt #532194346.
The clutch & the brake are on the same pedal
In theory the brake should let off a fraction of a second before the clutch takes up
The brakeeis the part that is sudden death being either 100% on or 100% off as it locks the diff so the rear wheels can only turn in opposite directions
If you lay under the mower whole some one works the pedal you will see that the clutch pedal first moves the pulleys on the transmission belt then goes on to pull the brake lever on
Usually there is a spring on the BRAKE ONLY section to adjust the balance between the clutch & the brake.
People often adjust this thinking it is the actual brake adjustment ( it is not ) .
The brake is adjusted by a nut on the actual brake ever on the axel
So you back off the spring where the clutch & brake rods join to dissable the clutch then adjust the brake arm so that the mower will hold on a steep hill
Then you take up the spring so the brake releases just before the pulleys tighten the belt .
