Powerlift troubles

Hello new to the forum please help I have 2 Grasshoppers both 725'2 around 6k hours on them each. The issue is that the one has the power lift it had been replaced 5 times by the dealer because it stopped working. I have been into it some and all the gears up front of the lift arm are good. it just rattles no up or down I am guessing there is a screw type mech . behind the front set of gears that operates the motion. But I sort of lost to find a listing for parts or know why this keeps happening. I read many people that have had them forever and no complaints about this.

WELCOME to LMF...
You can find the hydraulic power lifts parts and related pieces diagrams here... The Mower Shop, Inc. - Grasshopper Lawn Mower Parts - Parts Diagrams for Grasshopper Mowers
There are a few here with lifts that may be able to answer specific questions... :smile:KennyV

What year are yours ?
On some of the earlier models, there was a problem and all were fixed by Grasshopper.

When mine stopped, as you described, I took the front bolt out thus releasing the preassure and then it worked ok until it did it again.

My dealer called the factory and asked them why I was having a problem.
The factory said that, after setting cut height, back off the pressure (Raise Deck) just a whisper.
It has not jammed on me since following that advice.

If you have gone thru 5 of them, someone has not been paying attention to what is going on.
Were any tested after they were removed ?

Number 30 is the bolt I would remove.

Actually 4 this is the 5th I called grasshopper and they had said it was probably the brake or the clutch internally. They where tested they all worked until the weight of the deck was added. They gave me a 180036 number for a rebuilt model and a 180035 for a new one both one year warranty 400 vs 700 I guess I should go rebuilt the guy also said if I give it a good wack with a hammer on the shaft with the motor it may unstick it.

Grasshopper told me, $160.00 for a rebuilt one.

Try to unbolt it.

Whacking it could cause damage.

Talk to another dealer......Like I did.

What year of manufacture ?

Yes part number 180035 for a rebuilt and 180036 for a new one both 1 year warranty. I am thinking since I have had so many troubles with the power versin I may just try to bolt on a manual lift liek my other machine has. Pretty close to the prices the mower shop has listed The Mower Shop, Inc. - Product Catalog.

...This Video Library has a menu where the 2nd listing down has "Power Fold Electric Deck Lift". Clicking on that brings up a thumbnail to the right click on that & the latter half of the video shows the 33 & 34 series decks being manual lifts, & shows the Lift Assist bar also. Hope the link works.

thanks thehemikid,do'nt believe mine has that feature ,wish it did.I bought an elec. hoist a while back and will play around with it this winter to figure out an easy way to clean under the deck.I usually run it up on one ramp and lay down to clean it but am not crazy about doing it that way....russ

...Mine don't ether. I have the older 9561 deck, & I use 2 chain falls, 1 is for a safety. I just hook it on the bracket at the wide anti-scalp wheel at the front & lift it as high as the "Foot Deck" will allow.

mine is a 9661,so when you say you lift it as high as the foot deck allows I presume with the foot deck in the up position?I've never tried to lift the deck up still attached to the tractor so are you saying it will tilt up high enough to clean under the deck?...russ

...Yes, with the foot deck in the up position.

...Yep,...high enough for me anyway. It doesn't tilt up quite as far as those newer decks, but higher than I expected. I'd hate to have it fall down on me, that thing weigh's enough to hurt a fellow. That's why I use 2 chain falls, one for a back-up safety.

...I haven't even taken the blades off yet to sharpen them, I sharpen them while they're still in place. I just rotate the blade that I'm working on to the ~1-2 O'clock position & then grind it there, throwing the sparks away & upwards towards the bottom side of the deck. I flip the grinder over, then use the top side off the wheel (lightly) at a point ~180* from the typical spot on a grinding wheel.

...I just stopped too realize we're high-jackers! :ashamed: I hope they don't hang for that!

...Are you sure yours is a 9661 & not a 9861. I looked on the Mower Shops site & they didn't show a 9661, but they did show a 9861. The 98 shows (looks to me like) another pivot point (at part # 40 & 41 area) that mine doesn't have, ...mine is a 1 pc weldment "Lift Arm" If so a 98 deck should tilt up farther, I would think. I'll add pic's in a minute.

..Minute...

...Note: Just realized that the extra pivot arm deal is probable the 33-34 series deck "Lift Arm".:ashamed:
