Poulan Pro riding mower brake/clutch question

I bought a used Poulan and noticed when I release the foot brake, the mower jerks into motion. Also, you have to press real hard on the brake pedal to start.
Can this be easily adjusted easily, DIY?

The brake & clutch are on the same pedal
Get under the mower and follow the clutch / brake rod
Some where under there you will see a compression spring usually where the brake rod splits off the clutch rod.
Adjust it so that the clutch takes up just after the brake releases .

Poulan Pro #960 4600 75 00 clutch/brake pedal, shaft assembly bounce all over the place when machine is moving. Did a hand over hand and visual but did not see a large spring anywhere. In my repair manual it is shown as part # 161, spring return clutch, but shows no attachment points. I have looked on YouTube but as yet have not found any visuals. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, George
