I replaced the tensioner springs with one spring, frm the kids tramp. Seems to be a little tighter, I reckon about an inch play between the pulleys at the longest span. With a taught twang. Checked the idler arm bolt and hole, not egg shaped. Mowed a bit of long grass, no slipping. but this is a 20 year old mower. I replaced lots of things, had great fun shopping for parts. Carburetor, voltage regulator, pulleys, belts, cam shaft, holes in the deck, tyre tubes, steering rod ends and bushings. If you want a ride on mower there are options. Build it like I did, from a broken piece of rubbish, or pay for a new one.
 
Kinda wish I had some experience with that particular deck design but I yet to see a center rear discharge deck here at my shop. Even the PTO clutch is a design I have never seen.

With it being 20 yr old there will be a lot wear on the deck linkages depending on usage allowing the deck to shift closer to the PTO pulley. From the belt schematic I see you have two fairly long runs from the PTO and any forward movement is multiple by 2. IE for an example you have a 1/4" closer movement of the deck to PTO would require a belt at least 1/2" shorter. So then I suggest trying the AA105 [1/2" x 107"] and see if that fixes the problem. Yes I know it expensive to try but also worth if it fixes the problem. Even the Stens belt may actually be longer than the spec'd label or the one I have here. I have seen it here a couple times.

I do know that a particular MTD 46" deck here that MTD says the deck belt is 1/2" x 103.25" that I have to install a 1/2" x 102" to get deck to work properly. So far it been 4 customers and 1 for me.

I think we're getting closer to solving the issue. I did put a strong spring on the tensioner, and there was slight improvement. Your right about the deck, because I was looking for a mower with catch. I have also replaced the spindles and blades. If I'm right, I got a good bang for my buck. The generic design is common with many different brands, including Husqvarna and Craftsman. So getting parts is not difficult. Thankyou StarTech.
