How many of the members here can recognize the stuff when they see it? The back 5 1/2 acres of our property that I keep a brushpile and mow ATV trails on, is simply loaded with the stuff. Numerous neighbors use my brushpile, and the people next door take their kids back into the trails, so I always take the time to remind them at least once a year to watch for the poison ivy. Since I mow the areas around the pile and the trails low to the ground they are safe to walk on.

Guy that lives about 500 feet east of us has been using my brushpiles for 20 years, stopped to talk to him last summer, reminded him about the ivy, and he told me he wanted some to show his wife. Well I took a shovel and went back about 50 feet from where I had been and clipped off a shoot to take back and show him, he looked at it and said "Oh s--- that's not what I was thinking it looked like..."

Thanks for the link, lots of good information!! When I mow the trails back there, I always cover my legs and shoes with green garbage bags in case the mower discharge chute blows up chopped ivy onto my legs. Whenever I think of poison ivy, I remember the book I read one time where this guy (may have been Dave Barry) described the time he had to go number two in the woods and he used these big, shiny green leaves to wipe afterwards. Cruel as it may seem, I did laugh after I read that...wouldn't you?? :laughing::laughing:

There are herbicide sprays made specifically for the poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac - If you have them that bad in your area I'd spend some time with a sprayer and kill it back.

I have a gallon of 50% glysophate (sp)? but would hate to waste it spraying stuff 1000 feet back...

I use a 50% concentrate of glyphosphate mixed 1.5 oz/gallon on my poison ivy and it seems to do the job. I've even used it on well established vines growing up large trees with good results too. However, on the really large vines, sometimes I have to go with a 3.0 oz/gallon mixture.

I honestly don't know how much of the stuff is growing in my back 4.5 acres and I know a 3.0 oz per gallon will kill it, question is how much expense and work do I want to go to?

Careful using that strong of a mixture unless it is necessary. If you mix it too strong, it will burn the plants down too fast and the glyphosphate won't have an opportunity make it into the root system. And if the roots are killed, the plants will come back, probably within a month. When you mix it properly, the plants will stay green for at least a week to ten days, maybe even two weeks, before they start to die.

Will you be broadcasting or spot spraying? I have a 25 gallon sprayer that I use for both chores. When I broadcast, I drive fast enough so that only a light mist lands on the plants, you don't need to soak them. I operate the sprayer at roughly 45 psi to get a good fine mist. If I had to estimate my application rate, it would be in the 4-5 gallon/acre range. Which for me works out to 37-38 oz of concentrate per tank.
