MY poulan won't start unless I jump start it on the solenoid. Ignition switch is new. Once it is running I can get off w/o engaging the parking or disengaging the deck and it stays running. checked the one fuse I could find and replaced it . It's a hydrostat if that matters.

One of the plugs on a safety switch has fallen off or been broken or the switch itself is broken .
Prime candidate will be the brake switch which is under the mower .

To start off the key the power goes through the PTO switch then the brake switch then to the trigger on the solenoid .

The safety switches are ground switches
PTO + Seat
o r
Seat + brake
These are parallel circuits
And what matters more is weather it has a manual or electric PTO .

You were 100% on the problem. had to remove gas tank to find the bad ground. It was a ground wire coming off the brake switch.
