People,

Got 2 new Oregon blades for my MTD mower. They are pained black with high gloss paint. And the edge doesnt seem sharp when I run my finger across it. Is this normal?

Thanks.

Yes, that is normal.....most all new blades are not "razor sharp" at all!

Oregon sharpening standard is called 30-30 Which means sharpened at a 30 degree angle with a 30 thousands blunt edge. It is not recommended to put a knife edge on a blade because that edge wears down very quickly and will be at 30 thousands within a short period of time therefore no reason to remove more metal then requires.

Also when the paint wears off the leading they will be sharper. The paint also provides a safety factor for those handling new blades so they don't get cut easily.
