Morning all. First post for me. I have a B/S 10L 9020577 4.5 hp mower engine. Have been trying to replace engine stop bar with just a kill switch. In tests the line from coil to switch to ground back at the mower engine all checks fine, or like it should. But as soon as I place grounding clip back onto the coil my test of the hook up to switch for on and off with an Ohms Meter shows that the circut is open and will not ground out coil to stop the engine. I have been playing with this for several days, but now I am at a loss. Hoping for a clue so I can turn this mower off after use. Thanks Jim

Welcome. Nobody here is going to explain how to defeat a big safety feature like the bail handle. It's one of the few ambulance chasing lawyer induced safety features I like. If it doesn't function, 1 or more of the following is needed: Replace the cable or replace flywheel brake spring or clean the metal to metal contacts when the spring is relaxed or check wire from brake spring back to the coil or replace coil - kill circuit has failed. Wiring in a switch to reproduce the bail handle effect won't solve a bad coil.

dougand3...thanks for your help. Before I decided to take the drastic measure of unhooking the bail arm I did try and figure out where the issue was with I feel was pretty extensive trouble shooting. I purchased a new cable, and a replacement coil. probed all the connecting points with and OHMMETER till i was blue in the face. Each time I would have a grounded out condition. I did find the solid copper wire from coil had a bare spot that was keeping things from starting in the first place. replaced with a new wire and clip connecter, and at this juncture I have to use a dowel to pull spark plug boot to stop the poor thing.

Wire from coil to brake assembly is bad? Try a new wire - attach to coil where original wire is, run mower, then touch other end bare wire to engine block. It should stop

dougand3....you my friend are a genius. Used new ground wire. Did as you suggested. Motor Stopped right away. Went ahead and put bail arm and engine brake assembly back as it should be, fired her up and crossed my fingers. WA LA
Engine and break did as I hoped. Thank You very much for you knowledge, and help. Now if you will excuse me I have a hay field to mow.
