Only slow speed

Beware this MTD has two springs in the drive section. And either of the two moving idler arms can be worn and binding. But it does sounds like the engine to variable idler arm binding to me.

Can't see the variable pulley to transaxle section in the image posted just the engine to variable pulley.

Both springs are in the image I posted. Items 21 and 22. It attaches to item 37 which has item 35 idler pulley. Kinda looks like you would need to remove the fender pan to access the area. Of course the engine is probably still in the way. But is just looking at the diagrams.

In your image that pulley isn't tensioning the belt.
