Pick the rear end up. Transmission in gear or park, engine off. Turn one wheel. If other turns the opposite direction you have a traditional differential. Everything is functioning as it should. Yes, essentially one wheel drive, the easiest wheel to turn.
My Cousin Vinnie had a scene where this concept was explained with great clarity. The slippery substance was southern red clay mud, not frozen precip, but same result. The wheel on the slippery stuff spins and the other just sits there. This was the key piece of evidence that got Vinnie’s clients acquitted. Great movie. Also answers the question, “What is a yute?”
