Hello, I am trying to begin restoration on this mower, however I'm not sure that it can be done at this point, therefore I am reaching out for help/advice.
It has been painted black for some reason by the previous owner, but I plan on restoring everything that should be beautiful green.
Yesterday I learned a hard lesson in buying used equipment off of Facebook Marketplace. I purchased it for what I thought was a really good deal and was told from the seller that the original motor had locked up, so the owner threw it away, along with the original drive pulley/sheave, and he purchased a Predator 212 motor to replace it with. He said the motor just needed to be raised up and slid back a little bit on the mowers motor mount in order to fit with the smaller drive pulley he bought for it. I figured this would be a relatively easy task for me so I gave him the cash, loaded it up and brought it home. Upon further inspection, I noticed that even lifting the motor up and back all the way, the PTO Shaft won't even remotely be where the drive pulley needs to be. I decided to do some research on what came with this model from the manufacturer, and I discovered that originally (in the late 1990's?) that this model came with a Honda GX120 motor. Afterwards I went to find the serial number to expedite this process, and I couldn't find the tag on the frame anywhere. I contacted the seller and he told me the tag wouldn't stay on any longer due to its age. It was dragging the ground, so instead of fixing it, he took it off and lost it. I asked him if he ever kept the serial number filed away somewhere with the paperwork and he told me no because he never considered selling it until the motor went out on it and then he tried to repair it himself and couldn't. He literally couldn't give me a single bit of information about the mower that could have helped me other than that he believed he remembered that the original motor had a 3/4" shaft. I know now that the motor was originally a GX120, but in order to do this restoration correctly and safely, it would be important to know what type of engine IE: L, S etc... it appears at this point all I can do is try to narrow it down to what year model that I believe this mower is. Without having serial numbers all that I can see is that the plastic console on the handlebars where the controls are is black. Would it be safe to bet that this mower could be between a 1996-1997 model? Any newer model of 220-A that I have found online shows me that the handlebar consoles were green. Is this a safe assumption? Also, It appears they only made this model between the years 1996-2011, am I correct in my research? If so, would it be a safe bet that the '96-97 (or maybe ALL 220-A models) had motors that had the exact same PTO drive/sheave sizes? If so, I am showing the part number of the sheave that I need from JD would be "MT1066" with an Arbor size of 18.03mm. If that is correct, then can anyone tell me which "type" or series of Honda GX120 that I would need to make this shaft fit with the sheave and work as intended when this mower was new? I'm about tapped out from this project already and realize I should have not bought this. Live and learn. Thanks so much for any help or advice with this.
