While changing the oil I spilled oil into the top, so now when I start it, it smokes like mad and blows oil out. What do I need to do to clean this out?

What engine is this on? Push mower engine, Riding mower?
Most likely if you spilled it right down on top, you can remove the plastic blower housing and get some old rags to clean it up.
however, where is it blowing oil out from?

If oil went down the top, it's probably the fan blowing it around.

As Scrubcadet 10 said, remove the blower housing and clean off what you can. The hot engine will burn off the rest.

Just let it burn off. There's minimal fire hazard.

If the neighbors complain, tell them you're fogging for mosquitos.

Of course, we'll need to send the Mower Police around tomorrow to check your Oil Change License, but those fines typically run under $400.

Hope this helps.
