Oil Leak B&S Model No. 44Q777,

I have a Husqvarna 2748GLS with a B&S Model No. 44Q777,motor that has an oil leak from what looks like the crank seal. I replaced the seal and all of the gaskets needed to get to the seal last year and now it is leaking again. Is there something else I am missing? Is there a problem with this motor?
Any thoughts would be welcome. Thinking about re-motoring with different brand of motor and if I do what would be the best way to go?

Could be just a problem with the seal. the other possibility is the sump bearing that that seal fits in is damaged. Which would also mean that the crankshaft will be also damaged. Don't know on your engine but I have seen causes where the crankshaft would have a groove worn in it level with the hole that supplies oil to the bearing. The sump bearing will have a ridge at the same level on the side facing the rear of the mower. The combination of the crankshaft, and bearing damage allows the crankshaft to move around in the bearing causing an repeat oil leak.

You will have to pull the engine and inspect the crankshaft, and sump bearing for damage. If damage is found will need to replace both the crankshaft and the sump assy. The above problem has been linked to shorted electric clutches that allow arcing between the bearing and the crankshaft.

Another question, what other B&S motors would be a direct replacement if I don't want a 27hp?

In this application I can go smaller to save $. Just looking to bolt something in without having to modifies.

Most mowers are under powered so I always try to go up in hp. But I get what your wanting to do.

Have you looked for a used mower with a bad deck or transaxle that you could use the engine?

have you checked the breather assembly(valve cover) for obstruction?and did you use a seal protector when you replaced the seal?

Dave, Ty may be referring to an installation protector. Although spring load neoprene seals are long lasting they can be damaged during installation. A PTO? , a clutch input shaft, a drive axle, are typically splined and probably bigger OD than the dia of the installed seal. The normal installation force stretches the seal and the "sharp" splines can cut the seal so it leaks. A very common problem.

Some seals come with a plastic tube "protector" to placed over the spines. You lube the tube/seal and then slide the seal over the splines. Make your own protector by wrapping duct or insulation tape over the splines before installing the seal.

Yes, checked it all when I replaced the seals and gaskets last year. I think it's time to put a dial indicator on the shaft and see if it moves.

I never thought about using duct tape,i use an old microfisch card, for a seal protector.

All of the major engine makers use to have there own set of seal protectors as part of the dealer tool kit. but they are all been obsoleted out of the kit, and now they recommend the old microfiche cards for use as protectors. I guess they figure we might as well use them for something, other than taking up space. since all parts diagrams are now online.
