Its not made by John Deere, its made by MTD. You have to step up to the X300 series or bigger to get a real John Deere. All of the John Deere L, La, D ...ect series are made by MTD. If you can buy it brand new anywhere other than a John Deere dealership its not a real John Deere.

And another urban legend is that the box stores sells a different L, LA and D series than the dealers do. The L, LA and D series they sold and sell at the Box stores are the exact same ones they sell at the Dealer.

And my 8 year old LA120 Still Looks and runs like a champ.

This is true, the ones sold at the big box stores are the same mowers. The problem occurs when someone who purchased a mower at the big box store takes the mower to the dealer for warranty work. Dealers tend to make such customers a low priority.

Absolutely true. And the box stores may not have even assembled or set up the mowers properly from the get go, which can add to the troubles.

One of my coworkers recently found this out, after having bought a box-store rider last fall. He has had to have it repaired twice already, and now has relegated it to backup use, and just went to his local Cub Cadet dealer and bought a much better lawn tractor that he will have good dealer support and service for (and he loves it; dealer pointed out all of the ways that is is better built than his other machine). It may seem like spending that few hundred more at a dealer is a lot of money, but in the long run, it is WELL worth it (so long as you have a good dealer to work with).
