Have a troy bilt pony 12 yrs.old with 17.5 briggs.Last I used it seemed to lose power.Shut it down and would not start untill about 3 hrs later. When turning over sounded like slight knock.Cranked later and seemed ok.Went to start today and no start.Has new plug that fires, fuel in carb.Carb solenoid ok.Valve clearence ok.Any ideas? Also has 115 lbs compression.I am thinking maybe compression release valve on the cam.

Hello gadindixie,

When you post a help request, we need the stamped number information in the valve cover of your "17.5 briggs". They are not all the same.

Is it cranking, but hitting a dead stop point, or fighting the starter? The most common thing is that it needs the valves properly adjusted. double check your adjustment.

A quick check of the compression release is to remove the spark plug, then the valve cover. rotate the engine by hand on the flywheel screen while watching the valve movement. The valve should open and close about the same. The intake valve should have a slight activation "dip" just before the valve fully opens. If you see the dip, the compression release should be working. If there is no dip, the compression release is hanging up or bad.

Teryl Fixes all has a lot of You Tube videos showing how to check the cam operation and adjust the valves.

An oil change would be a good idea if you have not done one yet. (If the compression release is working.)

Past time to:

1.Pull engine shroud and clean the cooling fins. (should be done yearly if not sooner)
2.De-carbon the cylinder/s.
3.Valve adjustment
4.Entire fuel line change out, tank to carb.
5. Flush and clean out the fuel tank.
6. Clean or change sparky plug/s.
7.GE 100% Silicone caulk seal on a new air filter.
8.Oil and filter of you have one.
9.Lap head and block area where head and head gasket sits.
10.Torque head bolts.
