Hello gents.

I have decided to resurrect my fine condition LawnBoy L21ZSM. It's had a rest since last Sprig when it lost total compression. I'm guessing piston rings need replacement, but I may also replace the reed valves while I'm at it.

What source do you gents use for these parts? I know of a few online stores I have purchased parts from, but for the rings and reeds, I'd like to get quality, if not OEM.

The mower is in fine shape other than no compression, and I've even got a new side bagging kit for it that I have never used, so I'd like to get it up and running... literally.

Thanks in advance!

Tulsa Engine Warehouse is where I buy F series pistons for my rebuilds, as for the reeds I just go through partstree.com or eBay.
Hopefully this link below will take you directly to the piston you need for that F series.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Tough week.

MANY thanks for this, sir. Greatly appreciated. That mower looks new and has been lovingly cared for. My local Lawnboy repair guy said to throw it out and buy a new 4 stroke. Nuts. I'm repairing it. It's only a matter of new rings/reeds or both. I'll order them today and get them installed in a few weeks.

THANKS!

I agree 100%, why spend 300 bucks on a new mower when you can put 30 to 40 bucks in seals, rings and possibly a piston and have 20 more good years of service.

Do you guys end up honing the cylinder or are you just swapping in new piston and rings?

Yes I Hone the cylinders, being careful not to over do it though. I just hone it enough to remove the minor scoring and scratches while staying within the max limits for ring end gap.

Good advice. I will lightly hone the cyl just enough to take out scratches and dings.

The mower itself is in GREAT shape. It would be a crying shame NOT to fix it. I have a Lawnboy dealer that told me to throw it out and buy a new one. Ridiculous. Why send it to the scrapyard when, as Lawnboy posted, you can get another 20 years out of it with a simple fix.

Anyway, the piston/rings should be here in a few more days and I ordered a new reed valve kit too. Might as well. I rebuilt the carb a few years ago, so it will be good to go when I get everything done. I can't wait. My Snapper Commercial with Wisconsin Robin has an issue with the self-propel and it weighs about 85 lbs. It gets to be a pain to push. The Lawnboy is light and has self-propel drive.
