No brakes

I have 2001 MTD yardmachine 16.5 hp. I do not have brakes. I am looking for a repair manual download, and instructions on how to repair or adjust brakes. Reading through threads from various websites, I am not sure if there is actual brakes or the use of a pully to slow down the mower. thanks in advance for any help!

On the lower right side of the tranny is where the brake is located. there is a 1/2 inch nut between two 3/8 bolts that you turn to adjust the brakes.

Not trying to bud in but. When you adjust the brakes I always just do half a turn at a time and try them. If you go to tight it will cause a drag and wear the little pads down.
