So I inherited a G110 that has been acting up on me very suddenly. I had replaced plug, oil and filter, fuel and air filter and it ran great for a couple weeks. All of a sudden while cutting:

  1. Starts surging - revving high, then low, then high, then low. Then it stalls. The surging is very much like the surging you get when you are about to run out of gas, just a bit more intense.
  2. Wont start unless it sits for a bit, then trouble sgetting it started. Often need choke all on even though hot engine.
  3. Cut some more and starts surging again, stalls, then has to sit.
Considered usual suspects like fuel but Im using higher octane and I just changed the fuel lines. When cutting its going thru fuel nicely so I know its getting fuel. Just not sure why sitting would affect fuel delivery.

Two other things noticed as possible suspects.

On right front ofengine (from seat perspective) there was alittle splattering of fluid (oil?) from what I think is the "breather/seperator kit" canister according to parts fiche. Canister has a wire mesh inside of it that and the canister sits on the cylinger head I think (?). And tube off top of canister feeds toward air filter assembly. Both the grommet on cyclinder head and the tube to air intake are shot - SEE picture:

Could that compromised systen cause surging?

Also, recently the rubber gasket/extension under the hood that connects the hoods air intake grille into the intake screen came off. It appears to make a solid seal between hood and intkae when hood is closed. Without that I presume not as much airflow into engine cooling? Could surging be from slight overheating? See picture. Picture doesnt show the rubber flange but shows where it it:

Thanks for any and all support and advise. Cant afford to get this serviced right now so Im all on my own.

I think what you are referring to as the breather/seperator is probably the pvc. Though not sure. Can you take it off and clean with carb cleaner? Is there a metal flap inside that moves around?

The circular piece that sits on top the engine help to direct cool outside air into your engine for better cooling. You might consider removing the hood (to allow as much airflow as possible) and cleaning the carb. I'm guessing that the mower may have been sitting for a while and the carb is varnished up. I inherited a tiller that acted up all the time. I took the jets out (counting the turns) cleaned them with carb cleaner and put everything back just as it was. Now it runs great.

YMMV.

Oh, and welcome to the forum. Lots of good info to be had here.

Thanks for the info! I will clean the carb anyway I think because its never been touched and has been sitting.

Another forum user suggested it might also be as simple as the gas tank lid vent being clogged. And guess what ... sure enough it was full or dirt. havent tried it yet after cleaning but will soon and report back. The non to carb ...
