hi all, new to the forum and new to the jd 52 walkbehind, long story short i am doing a winter rebuild on this machine, its an older model i picked up cheap, deck and all seems very solid , the motor has been picked at a little kawasaki FB460V - Cso2 ? the starter is gone no air filter and a stuck exhaust valve, got the valve freed up, carb cleaned, i am in search of identifying the motor year so I can order the correct parts as well as the machine itself, so far I have only been able to find that maybe it's a 1990 - 1991 any info would greatly be appreciated, Thank You !

Hey mechanic mark, can you send a link to the service and repair manual for my Kawasaki fc 420v? That would be greatly appreciated.

well , seems as though this motor fb460v is going to be a money pit , also found that the motor is not the orginal it was a 17 hp, so i am looking at a change out, maybe a briggs 17 hp , could anyone advise on what exactly what to look for when swapping engines, i know the shaft size , and orientation of the base mount etc , any other bugaboos to watch out for? also still can not find any info on this JD 52 model , I have serial numbers and still turn up empty handed.

Some controls can be a PIA to fit. All mower engines run at around the same speed ~ 3500 rpm.
The Kwaka has metric threads in the spindle and the Briggs will be AF, Kohlers seem to be mostly metric.
Mufflers can also be a PIA as many are made to fit the application.

Go to places like these who flog superseded & excess engines at good prices
Small Engine Suppliers - Your online source for Replacement Small Engines, Tools & Parts
Object moved
Home - Small Engine Warehouse

most equipment makers specify engines rated at about 120% of the power requirement of their gear.
The above site all have good tech pages to walk you through the replacements in general terms.
Just be carefull that the engine you chose is legal in your local area.

I bought a pallet load of Kohlers from one of them and have been really happy with the whole deal.
Down here Kohler steal $ 700 + for replacement Command series flywheels & I bought complete new engines for slightly more.
Commands have a problem with the rotor magnets that are only glued into the fly wheels with a light duty glue . Little bits of gravel get past the screen and jamb between the magnets & stator coils
Result is a $ 1100 parts bill + labour. So I now just swap then out and kohler Aust is loosing $ 1000 /yr for being way too greedy.
