New seat kills motor.

I have a Cub CADET ULTIMA ZT1 42 inch. I got a new seat this morning. After putting the new seat on, then when I start the lawnmower it starts with no problem, but when I close the arm bars it shuts off. I put the original seat back on no issues. I put the new seat back on it shuts off again when I close the arm bars.

Seat safety switch?

Is this a new OEM Cub seat? Or Chinese replacement?

This is my favorite kind of problem: cut two wires, crimp.

There's one plug 4 wire into the one plug so which two to cut?

That's a lot of wires for a seat switch. Use a tester to figure out which need to be shorted. If it's not evident, you might want to consider reinstalling the original seat, or returning the new seat.

Can you use the seat safety switch from the original seat?

Another route beside the multitester route is googling the wiring diagram

Good luck finding a wiring diagram... what I don't get is why it starts at all, it's more forgiving than the Crapsman I just paid too much for. Anyway: just test the switch on the original seat to see what state the circuits should be in.

This warning is valid
Yes I really like it when some one cuts a 4 wire seat switch , joins all the wires together and burns out the magneto coils
This bit contains the wrong part number, I would have put the right one there but have been unable to locate it .
The Ultima uses the 725-04363 switch which is a standard 4 pin NO/NC interlock switch WRONG INFORMATION
Wired up so the switch can not simply be unplugged nor shorted .
The important question is did the new seat come with a switch already installed or did you have to swap the one from the old seat over.

THESE LINES DELETED BECAUSE IT WAS INCORRECT & THUS CONFUSING

The wiring diagram is in the owners manual which by law had to be supplied to you with the mower.
Cub for some reason are limiting the information available on line
WELL I have to admit defeat on this one
Star is correct the part number above is for the lap bar switches
I saw the words "Seat Switch " under the number 3 but did not notice the "to" or "the arrow pointing to the plug" but should have noticed the fact that there were 2 number 3's in the digram so it could not have been a seat switch as there is only one of them .
OTOH the seat switch is not listed on the electrical system page and I have gone to the effort of checking every diagram for the 42" version 2018. 2019 & 2020 but could not find a seat switch listed anywhere .
SO I have no idea where Cub hid the seat switch part number but I could not find it which is vary annoying as I am here to lear stuff like every one else.

Well the part number came from Parts Tree which is the best can do.
So If I am wrong so are they
If you have the right one then please post it.
As you know I am always happy to modify my posts should they be proven incorrect.
And yes I did mention the switches come in 2 variations that are not interchangable .

You need to look better as the part number for the seat switch is listed on the Partstree site under the ZT1-42 KH 2019 models.

The switch you listed is for the lap bars. The seat switch is listed just not the place you expect to be. I am just let some else find it, my movie is coming on so I got to go watch it. I can tell off the top my head it is a NC / NC switch.

A screen grab from Partstree. ZT1-42KH 2019 model IPL.

Besides you not going to learn how find this info if I do it for you.

And the other switch is a N/C , N/O.

could be wrong seat switch some are normally open some are normally closed when you pull the handles in it is looking for someone in the seat. R U letting the park brake off before U pull the handles in? If not it will die.

Assuming that Star is correct then joining any of the 4 wires will not work because the switch is a NC one so when you sit on it the circuit opens & not closes.
Add to that to prevent people simply pulling the plug out and disabling the switch, the plug end has a shorting strip incorperated so the mower will not start if the wires are either shorted together or the switch unplugged

I can see you have never worked with these switches. There is NO shorting strip used with the connector housing on these particular switches; unless, they have redesigned it lately. which they could have in the last couple years. Actually one circuit is the magneto kill circuit and the other is the PTO kill circuit on 2019 and older units. I have seen the new 2020 models and later wiring diagram yet.

You missed one important page the "Quick Reference page"

Also you need a copy of the service advisory CC-1065 as the main harness, seat switch, and ignition switch was change in 2020 model production year (and later models). I did assume here since the seat is being replaced it is an older mower.

Plus there was a changed made to drive idler bracket (SN 1K198HXXXXX through 1J019HXXXXX) to correct the throwing of the drive belt due an alignment problem. Ref in CC-1070. I would think the new bracket is currently being used on the new models.

Well there you go
I actually did check the quick refference pages, just not the right one.

It is listed in the following

But not these

Which serves me right for not checking every year variant listed or requesting the full model & serial numbers before doing a search

My apologies for suggesting Googling a wiring diagram. I could not find it.

I would be very wary of tampering with any safety interlock that has four wires to a simple switch. As we all know, a switch doesn't need four wires. That suggests to me that the interlock has been engineered to defeat rudimentary attempts to override it. Heck, so far that engineering is working because we are all here still discussing how to defeat it.

If you do this enough you will learn as I did ask for all the available info. Here every piece of equipment the comes into my shop gets the model and serial recorded along with the engine info and now the transaxle info. It takes at times a lot of leg work.

Well the following isn't for the ULTIMA ZT1 42 but it does show how the same switch is wired on the 2019 and older CC ZTRs. As I said I don't have the 2020 and newer wiring diagram yet.

YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! It works perfectly. You need to understand why this was driving me insane not only the cadet I bought is the new Ultimate series I order arm rest they sent the wrong one's and when I called them to let them know they said let us research the problem and we'll will get back with you. A week later UPS pulls up in my driveway with this HUGE BOX and when I opened the box Cub Cadet sent me a new seat with arm rest. I look up the seat it cost $699.00 and the seat has a built in suspension in it, and I wasn't charged a penny. So that why I was on the phone with everyone trying to figure this out. So again thank you so very much.
