Hi People I have a couple questions, so I had a 20 yo Honda HRR mower with the gcv160 engine, never burned any oil between changes never got a puff of smoke on startup unless I turned it upside down for some reason, deck was shot so I bought a new Honda HRN216 from HD with the GCV 170 engine this year. It has a punch mark and a green dot on the data plate so I assume that means it has the Cam factory replaced? Anyway It has about 10 hours on it now I get a beautiful "Puff of Smoke" on start up any time it sits and oil the level is down 1/2 way on the stick after 5 hours? (I changed the oil twice (10w-30 conv.) during the 1st 5 hours) for break in, I mean, I know this is a lawn mower but Is this somewhat normal for the GCV170 engines with low hours these days?

Honda quit making push and self-propelled mowers about 2 years ago. This mower just purchased must be new old stock. It is still under warranty, so take it to an authorized Honda warranty shop to get it checked out. No, it is not normal at all for a Honda GCV170 to smoke a little or a lot. Great engine.

This is a previous defect return, and a store sold it to you. I've seen this before. It was not properly checked out before reselling.

Wow, I was afraid of that, it is under warantee. When I bought this in March, Home Depot had about 650 HRN216VKAD available for shipping (on line only) and a couple other Honda mower models at the time. The engine model is GJAUA 2361122MY03 with a punch mark and blue dot. I assume this engine had the new cam installed by Honda factory to clear the Recall but that should not cause this problem. Assuming I am doing everything right, proper oil ect. WTF else besides the rings could it be? I may have to buy a compression tester right? It's a great mower so far compared to the old Honda. I was not trying to get 20 years out of it this time but more than 1 year out of a GCV170 Honda engine
Thanks People
