New deck belt not disengaging

It is a 2004 MTD Yardman 42" deck. 13A766OG752.
I replaced the belt that the 2nd had mower came with with a Kevlar 754-0371A, 74" x 5/8" belt. It was not possible to see what the old belt was but my research tells me this is the correct belt.
Now when I try to start the engine the deck is engaged. I have now burned out my solenoid but that's an easy fix.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

There are 3 pulleys, 2 for the deck and the drive pulley. its not really possible to mis-route the belt, other than putting it outside the pinch pins on the drive pulley, which it is not. The belt number is correct, the length 74" and width 5/8"is correct. Is there any adjustment of the deck movement, which seems to be vertical only?

If the deck is engaged (blades are spinning), when you start the mower, then obviously the belt tension is good enough (tight) to do so. That means if the belt is routed correctly, the spindles and pulleys are all good, etc., then you have the WRONG size belt. Double check the belt size by going to multiple websites. Maybe one of the pulleys has been changed previously and is larger than original.

All appearance come to he has the correct belt. The issue with this style of mower is it uses the deck lift mechanism to also de-tension the deck belt by pulling the deck forward against spring tension to release the belt when the lift lever is moved to the very top position.

Some of the older mowers with this style engage mowing height system has an adjuster on the rod that went from the deck lift rod to a rear deck lift arm that was also attached to the flat plate on the back of the deck which has a spring connected between that plate mechanism to the rear axle.. If this one has that adjuster it may need shortened in order to pull the deck further forward to release the belt.

Looks like it still does Item 41 in combination with item 33 of this diagram may need to be shortened to fully disengage the deck.
