I just sold my husqvarna mz6128. We just bought a new home and it was just a little too big for the yard I have now. Our yard is sorta hilly with a few slopes. I'm trying to decide between two different mowers. One is a Husqvarna GTH24v52ls and the other is the new zero turn from Husqvarna its the M-ZT5228 it has a 28 hp commercial Briggs engine and the other has a 24hp kawasaki. I really like the zero turn but don't want to keep my yard tore up from the slopes. And on the other hand I also really like the gth garden tractor with the Kawasaki. I'm also gonna get a bagger for whichever one I get. With that being said what do you all think would be the better mower. GTH $3199 and the M-ZT is $4799. Thanks

mm5832,
Looking at the Husqvarna website, are these the same mowers as the GT52XLS lawn tractor and M-ZT52 zero turn? They appear to match the specs you quoted with a $3299 MSRP for the LT and $5499 for the ZTR. If Husqvarna had that M-ZT52 last fall when I was shopping I "may have" given it some consideration for the money!! I would assume that the B & S Endurance Commercial would be a decent engine and it sports the commercial Hydrogear ZT-3400 trannies and cast-iron spindles. All they had when I was looking were the MZ5225 & MZ5424S ZTR's and they just weren't "Commercial enough" for what I was wanting. On the downside, the M-ZT52 only has an 11gauge deck, but that's not a big deal since it carries a decent 3-year warranty(and a 1-year Commercial, which is definitely a good sign regarding it's durability). Personally, I'd never go back to a lawn tractor after having a ZTR, but that M-ZT52 only weighs 760lbs and like you said it may be problematic with a lot of slopes(my Gravely 52" is almost 1100lbs). The GT52XLS looks like a very good lawn tractor and IMHO Husqvarna LT's are some of the best.....but it doesn't look like your dealer is giving you as good of a deal as on the ZTR. You have a difficult choice to make there!!!

Yeah I believe there the same I may have mis typed it sorry about that. Yeah the zero turn is a little light weight it sounds like. I'm just torn between the two and can't decide right now.

Yeah the ZTR might have some trouble on the slopes, depending on how steep they are. I would demo both mowers and see which you prefer.

Just went and determined the grade of my yard. Most of it is a 15% grade maybe just a tad more in some spots and less in some spots. Tomorrow I'm gonna take a pic or two and try and post them on here for you guys to take a look at. Thx for all the input.

I would go with the GTH24v52ls I might be a little partial though because I have been looking at that same mower.

I think a ZTR would be fine on the slope, though.

Well here's the.dilemma I'm in now. Went today and bought the tractor style husky came home and mowed my yard. It did fine on most of it but when I got to the steepest part of the yard it really disappointed me. It practically spun all the way up the hill. When I got to the top it wouldn't turn because it was spinning so bad and the grass and ground was as dry as a bone. So I called my dealer and he said I could bring it back and get the m-zt52. So when I got it home I tried it out and and was 100% better didn't spin at all. All I.can.say is problem solved. And thanks for all the.input.

Hmmm......I'm surprised the tractor spun out but the zero-turn didn't! But I'm sure you will be happy with your new mower!
Good luck!

Yeah it surprised me too I wasn't expecting the tractor style to not perform on a hill.

mm5832,
My bad.....I noticed, when looking at those two Husqvarna's that the GT52XLS tractor was a little lighter(635lbs) versus the M-ZT52 ZTR(760lbs), but it had 23x10.5 12" rear wheels/tires versus the ZTR's 23x9.5 12". I just figured that in most cases a LT will do better on slopes than a ZTR.....but guess I'm wrong about that in this case. Anyway, it's good that you have a dealer that worked out getting you the machine that would do what you needed. Let us know how you like that M-ZT52 after using it for a while. It sure sounds like a very good mower for the price!!! And post some pics of it!!

P.S.
You "did" check the tire air pressure in the rear tires on that LT and try running them 1-3psi lower than the recommended pressure didn't you?? Sometimes just doing that will make a big difference on hills.

K-Pro-Mowing,

That was the same opinion I had after looking at the 52" Toro Z-Master 2000 Commercial ZTR last fall. The Toro Titan MX mowers aren't bad for a high-end Residential unit(with a 3yr/400hour warranty and lifetime frame warranty).

K-Pro-Mowing,

I know I'm a little "biased", but check out the link I provided in the following thread for the new 2013 Gravely Pro-Turn ZTR's(very good bang-for-the-buck if you have a local Gravely dealer to look at one). Link to thread follows:

mm5832,
That mower looks a LOT like the 52" Dixon DX100 Commercial mower that I almost bought last fall(even the same deck lift mechanism). Husqvarna bought Dixon a couple of years back and I think they have "merged" some of the models across the brands. The only major differeence I see is the Dixon had a 22.5hp Kawasaki engine and your M-Z52 has the 28hp Briggs Commercial. The Dixon was my second choice behind the Gravely I got and a 60" Bad Boy Outlaw was my third choice(and it had a 30hp Briggs Commercial on it). I think you've got a keeper there and if you keep the maintenance up on it it'll probably last a very long time. Like I said, I wish thay had that model last fall when I was looking cause it would have ended up on my short list. Enjoy!!

I dont usually post on alot of these threads for higher end mowers... but I think the reason the tractor spun a wheel was because it did not have a locking differential. Where as ZTR's have 2 wheel motors which obviates the need for the diff. By the way if your hill is 15% then mine must be way more... I can mow across it with no issues, so I have to believe yours would be a piece of cake. Any congrats on the new mower... it looks like a heck of a mower.
