Hi I'm new to this forum. I joined hoping to get some help fixing my mower. Its a craftsman "automatic" with a 20hp B&S motor and 46" deck. I can start the mower with the brake pushed in but as soon as I realease the brake or attemp to turn on the blades the mower dies. I took the seat switch in and had it tested. Checked out as being good. If I unplug the brake safety switch after I have the mower running it will drive. But it still dies when blades are engaged. I'm baffled. Not very familiar with working on lawn tractors. The battery is junk and I have to charge it everytime I use it. Could that cause it to act this way? Or is it more likely a safety switch? I'm not even sure how the safety switch for the blades works. Or could it be the electric clutch? Any help is greatly appreciated. Getting pretty frustrated and grass won't stop growing.

I know you said you had it tested but sounds like the seat switch. Check the wires going to it. Make sure it is installed right.

The wires seem good. Everything is hooked up properly and there are no bare or corroded wires. Switch was tested with a ohm meter. I held the switch in my hands and pressed it with my thumb while I was playing with the brake and blade switch. Also jumped it with a paper clip. Nothing made a difference. Infact all the wires for all the switches look good.

Funny thing with the brake safety switch. The tractor will not start with it unhooked. But once it is running I can unhook it and it will continue to run. With it unhooked I can release the break and drive all over. With it plugged in it dies as soon as I release the break. I jumped it with a paper clip across black wire to white wire and it made no difference. This sound normal?

What did it do if you just unplugged the seat switch??

Also unplug the wire connection behind the deck switch and look for corrosion at any terminal.

If all is clean and the seat switch has no affect I would try then replacing the deck switch. All safety switches I think go through it.

Seat switch if unplugged, connected, jumped, closed or open makes no difference. However after testing both the switch and pigtail for the switch both are working. It has to be electrical. The way it cuts out is just as if you leave the seat with out the brakes engaged. Has to be one of the switches but I cant seem to run it down. When blades are engaged it flat out dies. Doesnt even attempt to engage the clutch. Model # is 917.273041. I'm about to light the stupid thing on fire.
