Just how are you jumping, battery to battery? If so it sound like you bought a bad battery. If not maybe a bad battery cable or connections

check alternator/generator voltage. When the moqwer starts it should run off the alternator voltage

I guess I don't under stand what you are saying or I don't understand how this engine runs? I always thought that the smaller mower engines run off the mag? If so no electric to the engine at all and it should run? I sure don't know everything and this engine may run off a ignition coil and not a mag or is it a diesel?

I guess my reply was not spot on I should have said check the charging voltage. If you have a battery you must have something to recharge it.
Sorry

Well, normally, when a magneto type engine has been started, it doesn't require any voltage to keep running unless it has a Kohler SmartSpark, and/or a fuel shutoff solenoid, which if it is newer, it likely does.

But why it won't crank with a brand new battery, but will if the brand new battery is jumped, prompted the first question about how it was jumped, in a
way to figure out the problem, like a main battery cable/ground/etc. problem.

We need to know that, how he has gotten it started, model/type-spec numbers off of the engine, maybe a pic or 2, all would be helpful.

More info/pics/ description could only help us help you.........

Now fuel shutoff valve I understand. The Kohler smart spark controls the timing as I understand it. I worked on a Kohler that wouldn't start and mice got into the engine and chewed the wires off to the timing module. So yes you need voltage for both. Diesel engines also have a shut off solenoid.
