My New Mower!

#1

After 12 years of using my Beloved Dura-Force ,(R.I.P.) I ended up purchasing a 4 stroke model -10685 ,and I must say , I am pretty impressed ! I searched for another Dura-force, but just could not wait ,as my lawn was getting to be about 1 ' tall ! Does anyone else here use this model? If so ,what are your thoughts ? Glad to find this forum . I got it used for $125 ,it looks like it was not used that much.It does puff some white smoke every now and then ,so I believe my crankcase Breather needs to be replaced.I checked the oil ,and it is not contaminated,so I think that must be it. Is it possible to replace it myself or should I take it to a shop ? Any input greatly appreciated !

Thank you ! I never thought I would use a 4 stroke mower again ,But this mower just chomped through my 1 foot high grass like butter. My dura-force used to choke out on much shorter grass. So I am impressed so far!

very nice mower i like to 4 stroke better seems like they have more power then the 2 stroke I'm not much of a 2 stroke fan any more

well in the defense of the duraforce 2 stroke, they were jetted too small (emission standards) making them bog like crazy in thick grass because they run too lean. The F series lawnboys have an air adjustment on them and they will dust a 4 stroke when adjusted properly. Nothing but a two stroke lawn boy will be touching my lawn. If you ever get a chance to jump on an f series lawn boy do it because you will not want to mow with anything else after using it!

I have heard about those. I would like to get my hands on one. What years were they made ? I have always loved 2 strokes. Owned many Motorcycles, and some of my faves were 2-strokes.

The f lawn boys were made from 1978 to about 1996 or 1997. Then toro produced the dura force in 1998 to 2004. Where do you live I will buy the F off you right now! Bet the exhaust ports are clogged or it needs a carb job if the Briggs or honda John Deere out performs it. I have redone about 10 f series mowers and half of them had dirty exhaust ports and the carb had trash in it. That is just my opinion! John Deere makes a great mower, but they are also expensive as sin for just using a cookie cutter motor. Again just my opinion!

i live in indiana and would love for someone to buy this thing it has the bagger with it to its electric start only but I'm sure some could put a pull start on it its a series 7271 AE and yes the JDs are expensive but i have less in my JD 14 SB then i have in the lawn boy and it may need the carb cleaned or the exhaust cleaned i haven't done a thing with it and don't want to so please come get it LOL

There have been several threads about two-stroke vs four-stroke and you can guess where I come down on that issue.

Somebody mentioned cutting 1' tall grass. The ultimate mower for that kind of job is a Suzuki-powered Toro (two-stroke). I think it's actually overpowered for mowing "lawns". I use it as a cross between a field mower and a regular lawn mower.

Scott47429, I agree with you, i have a John Deere 14 sb and I love it. Been mowing faithfully with it for over 12 years. Had to replace the back wheels since the tread was wearing thin, but other than that it's needed nothing.

#18

man you are right about that toro 21! they are the strongest 2 stroke to date! the duraforce and m were supposed to copy that exact engine but both fell short of the original because of emission standards.

A Lawn Boy isn't the mower for someone that wants to do nothing more than pull a rope, and cut grass.
However, if you enjoy working on small engines as a hobby, like getting all kinds of looks as you mow your lawn (and a great cut they produce), and appreciate the craftsmanship and quality of days gone by, you can't find a better product. For the guys here still using the old Lawnboys, how many other guys on your street, or neighborhood still are?

#20

turfboy1997

turfboy1997

To this day i know people that hate lawn boys! and always will and swear by a different brand! i am just telling you the facts that lawn boys are the lightest (excluding the M series) easiest to work on mowers and if they are dialed in and have over 95 to 100 lbs of compression they will dust a 4 stroke because there is more RPMs. I think that the only place that 4 stroke beats the 2 is in huge grass and wet huge grass. But i plan on keeping up with my grass because i love to mow now because i have so many lawn boys to choose from. You would strain some part of your anatomy trying to lift that john deere somewhere. besides this is the lawn boy forum anyway so your not changing my mind!

My father-in-law has a long, steep bank that he has to weed eat. Every now and then, I take a LB and make about 3 passes and its done. I have to hold the handle good to keep it from turning over, but the 2 cycle doesn't skip a beat!

The EPA and Toro are the reason that i am doing what i do with restoring lawn boys! i want to keep as many of them going as i can, and i love doing it as a hobby. I think they got a bad rap and i think its all a bunch of political bull crap because we still have all these other kinds of 2 stroke equipment still being produced such as weedeaters, chainsaws ect..... ok i am done with my soapbox for the day!

James had mentioned that he was a "Lawn boy ",taking care of a neighbor's lawn for like 2 years ,so he would have needed a solid mower ! It's a Suzuki engine. I might add that I used it a lot over the weekend. There's lots of semi-field areas at my place in Cleburne Co. And almost all of it is on steep grades that preclude using a four-stroke.

Yes ,I saw that it was a Suzuki engine .I have never seen one of those(Suzuki engine) on a mower. I owned several Yamaha RD400 2 stroke twin Street bikes when I was younger. They were too much fun. I think it would be neat to yank the muffler off ,& put an expansion chamber on a 2 stroke mower to hear it wing!! ,like the ones those kids put on their Go-peds. I guess it would be annoying after a while ,but crazy anyway.I wonder if anyone out there has done that.

I've thought about that mod for the Suzuki-Toro... it would require fabricating the expansion chamber and some mounts but the result would be awesome.

Thanks for the post & thread guys. I've saved some of the info under "next mower", about the F series with the air screw adjustment, & the Toro 21 possibly being a little stronger than the F. I have a LB 10227 I bought for mowing a steep bank (~28*) that I've attached to my 721D to make life easier (disabled) once a week.

One time the grass got more than a foot high on that bank cause the coil quit from moisture, & I learned (on this forum I think) to bake the coil. Had to do that a couple more times till finally bought a new coil. Anyway, the LB mowed it, not like butter, but far better than pushing it along the bank for about 200' x 4 passes.

Mine probably needs a better tune, but the more power of the F, & Toro 21 interests me "if & when" I decide I need Mo-power.

Is someone saying that you can still buy a two-stroke Lawn Boy walk-behind mower? I've been told (and did a minor amount of research to back it up) that the 2-strokes were history and the 4-strokes that "replaced" them (same color but nothing else as good) weren't worth having. I loved my two-strokes -- all three of them over a 10 year span -- because they would mow upside down if you could figure a way to get fuel into the carb. The engines wore out quickly in my use but the mowers were still worth the money and then some.

If I can get new ones, I want them!

WELCOME TO LMF!
I didn't think you could get any NEW 2-stroke Lawnboys. All the ones Lawnboy still makes (these: http://lawnboy.com/wpmModels/models.html) I believe are 4-cycle. I could be wrong. But a lot of people buy older Lawnboys on ebay or Craigslist, so people can still get 2-stroke ones even if they are not manufactured still.

The tried and true 2 cycle LB's are long gone. The last "good" ones were the F series engines, and they stopped producing them back in the 90's. Then you could get the V series, and Duraforce up until '03 I think, but they don't have near the same reputation as the older models.

Well i wasn't going to say anything about the mower that i have on ebay right now, but i just could not resist! I have a restored 1979 F series 7268 on ebay as we speak. I have been running lawn boys for a long time and have not enjoyed mowing the yard as much as i did this year with this mower! It has incredible compression, and it runs better than it looks! I am not going to cheap sell it though because i went the extra mile and found New OEM plastic wheels for it! i have had it on CL for a month now with no bites. It needs to go to a collector or someone who loves lawn boys and will take care of them like they should. I am hoping i get what i want out of it, but i am prepared to hang on to it through the winter and list it again in the spring if needed.

i know its expensive, but the bag kits alone are selling for $60-$80, and you can do whatever you want to the handle but it is completely cleaned and de rusted and was chrome originally, so i left it that way! It dose not get more vintage than this baby! its 33 years old, and starts on the first or second pull everytime!

It's true that you can't buy new two-strokes but you can have a lot of fun finding used ones and fixing them up.

I don't get the "engines wore out quickly" comment... my experience has been that they last a long time if you take care of them. I've got a few with pretty high hours that still run fine.

If you want one on mint condition, you can just pay for a restored Lawn-Boy. There are a couple of the members here that do restoration.

The solution with the reason
Great
I too am a two stroke fan, being lighter, there is no reason for self-propelled, at least on level grounds.
Also, they are less noisy.
Now, I too own a 10685, an excellent unit, but it could be better.

A smooth plastic deck(Honda) to allow for better mulching...Around here, the grass is always wet, this leads to accumulated mud and grass under the deck - quite the problem..
I really do have a lousy lawn, I must admit...

I don't quite follow your comment about a plastic deck allowing better mulching. I understand that a non-rusting material is highly desirable but Lawn-Boy's mg/al deck takes care of that. Is plastic better for some reason?

Also, exactly what material is the Honda deck made of? I have heard that they do break sometimes but so does a mg/al deck if you hit it hard enough.

Thanks for the link, cutty. It was interesting but not all that specific about exactly what that "polymer" is. I wonder if it's stronger than mg/al. I suspect that it's cheaper. However, I have no doubt that it's better than steel since it can't rust.

Now I must think a little....lol....lol...
The problem that I have is that my grass is always wet...it seems to rain every day around here and the drying time is l o n g , ever so l o n g .....So, the mud , grass, and moisture stick and clog up the works..

The mowing with the 10685 takes many hours, of which, many are spend cleaning the machine, over and over...I must try some more of that no-stick spray...
A smooth plastic surface would be better, similar to the Honda machine...Or a teflon surface.....nothing sticks, at least for the first week !!!

Everything breaks, or rusts....magnesium is particularly bad...Hard to say what is best....
The LB 10685 is far too "unstreamlined" at its undersides, far too complex with housings, bumps, seams, screws...
We need a total reingineering here..
A 100% dedicated mulcher would be much the better...

Yeah a mower like that would be nice! Don't get me wrong...I do bag in the fall, but in the spring and summer it is 100% 24/7 mulching. It would be nice if they made a commercial mower superior at mulching (someone might say the Honda HRC mowers), but maybe wider than 21 inches. All the commercial mowers (like the Exmark Metro 26) are great baggers, and just OK mulchers. :frown:

I find that my HRX217HYA does much better than my HRR216TDA in wet or tall grass (or even average-height grass). I think it is a combination of the NeXite deck and the more powerful engine (it has the GCV190 engine). :licking:

Yeah - pull and mow, and then after three years, pitch it and buy another..
This, IMO, is NOT how things should be done..

These Mowers send shivers up my leg!! They make me drool! Look at the size of the fuel tanks !! Look at the huge flange on the grass chute ,and the size of the grass catchers! Absolutely amazing . I would trade my wife for those mowers ! JK !!

They are as stock as i could get them! They run like brand new! I wish i had taken before pics because you would not have believed the original condition. I wont be selling those for a little while or ever. I recently picked up a 8401 also that will look the same when i am done.
