Murray / Scott's 21995x8b transmission drive cable disconnnected/broke?

Hey guy's,

New to this forum... but I can't believe this place even exists ;)

Anyways, I was given a Scott's 3 in 1, self propelled mower. The model number is 21995x8b... which is apparently discontinued. Which makes it awfully hard to find any valid info on the thing. Well, it runs like a champ. Starts on the first pull... transmission still works (when manually engaging the lever by hand).

My problem is that the drive cable that engages the transmission is disconnected, and I have no clue how to get it back on. Based on the diagrams that are in the manual, the spring is not broken. I don't think its the style of spring that has a hook on it, but more of the "L" shaped type that slips thru a hole and is turned a bit. My problem is that the spring is under a TON of pressure, and I have no clue how to get it back on. It's in a real tight space, and was wondering if there was some "trick" or different approach that I'm just not seeing. Take a look at the pic below, I hope its pretty clear. That spring is supposed to hook into the lever on the left, which engages and disengages the transmission.

I did consider that option, but with the amount of tension on that spring, it's not really doable. Not to mention if I did actually have the strength to pull that spring over, there's no way I could get that screw in straight. The fabricator inside me thinks the screw would be severely cocked, leading to a stripped out screw.

Although that isn't the right diagram for my mower, the springs are exactly the same. Argh.
 
Ha! That's exactly what I just did about 10min ago. It seems that someone tried to "fix" this before. The wire near the crimp inside of the handle assembly is all frayed and slipping a bit. I'm hoping I can order just the cable and spring...
