Mowing at Night? Repeatedly? Seriously?

I've made a few comments on here about a neighbor that actually seems to cultivate Crabgrass. It's one devil of a time keeping his Crabgrass out of my lawn, but I manage to do it. When he mows (he has a generic Rider that looks like an MTD or Yardman), he cuts to scalping height. It's no wonder he has a lawn full of Crabgrass. I cringe when I see his scalped lawn during the heat of summer.

He has odd mowing hours. During the summer, he likes to mow at 7:00 AM on a Sunday. Odd, but that's his gig. I'd never complain, but I'm surprised other neighbors do not complain about the noise at 7 AM on a SUNDAY MORNING!

Now, to the point of the post;

RECENTLY, after the time change, he has begun mowing long after dark. I mean he starts now at 8:00 PM or even 8:30 PM when it's pitch black, sometimes not even a moon. He's done it repeatedly since the time change.

I know riders have headlamps, but do ANY of you guys make a habit out of mowing at night in complete dark or do you know someone who does? I understand that if it's an emergency, you do what you have to do, but repeated mowing in the dark? Odd does not even begin to explain this behavior to me. There has to be ONE day where you can get to the lawn during daylight hours, yes?

A lot of people enjoy mowing at night.

My mother is a nurse and worked 7pm to 7am on her nights off she did yard work.

It really is best for the grass to cut it at night.

I have tried it once when I had the CC LT1045, it had lights but they were about as worthless as you know what on a Boar Hog. I do know that there is always talk here on the forum about putting lights on mowers but like you I find when people come home at night they prefer to relax and don't care to listen too or for someone mowing their lawn after dark. We also have a noise ordinance that keeps things under control after a certain time.

Fair enough, guys. Well, it was a new one on me, that's for sure. I've never seen (heard actually since I can't see in pitch black) anyone mow at night before. I guess if you have decent headlamps and you have a simple enough lot, it's doable. Still, in a divided lot neighborhood, people may think you odd.

I no longer have a rider, or heck, maybe I'd try it! :smile:

Hey Ric, we have a noise ordinance too, but it's not enforced, and most neighbors do not complain. You are not supposed to mow before 8 AM or after Sunset on weekdays, or before 9 AM on Weekends. My neighbor has been out at 7 AM sharp on Sunday mowing and no one says anything. But when the sun sets at 6 PM that makes it tight for some to get the lawn done I'm sure. In the summer, when it's light until 8 or 8:30 it's not so odd to mow then obviously. Just seems odd when it's pitch black and you hear a rider mowing a lawn next door.

I had a neighbor that would cut after 8:00pm in the summer and it p$$ed me off because our newborn would go to sleep around 7pm. Our baby never woke up with the noise, but if he did, I think my wife wouldve strangled him.

Even with daylight savings time, I feel bad cutting my grass in the dark and pretty much save it for the weekends. I also feel bad cutting it before 1000am on the weekends.

How can cutting at night be better for your lawn???

As we all know it is not good to cut grass in the afternoon when the sun is the hottest. As you cut the grass the sun burns the tips.

Guy I know works 2nd shift, and on his days off he always does his yard work starting around 4 or 5 pm.
