1972 Ford, 12 horse, riding mower, stick shift. Starts and runs but when we try to put it in gear it won't move. Suspect transmission problems. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks
Is the belt on and good and tight?Oil in the transmission, does the clutch work right might have to to a little looking into this problem a little more and see what happens? Is there a safety switch not working right? I think you need to check out a few thing first my friend.:licking:Welcome aboard LMF
Belt is fine. Oil is fine. When we let out the clutch, nothing happens. Not aware of a safety switch. Would there be one on a 72? Where would one look for it? Thanks for the reply.

Park your mower on a downgrade then hitch up an F350 on a tandem axle utility trailer I assure you it will move rapidly then......:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

Are you sure the shifter lever is actually engaging the gears? Just becuz the lever moves does not mean the tranny is in gear. With engine off, clutch out, and tranny lever in position, see if you can push the mower by hand. If it will roll that means tranny is not engaged.

Do you mean "when we shift transmission into gear and let the clutch out it won't move"? May I assume the engine is running at the time you do that?
How many gears does it have in forward? Do any of them work? What about reverse? Can you hear or feel any grinding or actual engagement when you move the shifter lever?
DETAILS, DETAILS, and ACCURATE ONES, please. Any strange noises? Were you using it to tow an F 350 last week and fried the clutch in the process?

The only safety switch that would be on your 1972 model is going to be the one that prevents starting the engine...
Has it been working well up to now..? Or has it been getting temperamental in wanting to shift into any gear?
Can you find Reverse gear? And one last question, will it roll if you pushed it by hand with the engine off?.... :smile:KennyV
I have almost the same problem, except that the first time I tried to drive it,. it went about 5 feet and stopped then I shifted to a different gear and it started to make loud "cracking" noises. Any advice?~~~Barry
