Mower will not move

Removed the mower deck for repairs after the I removed the deck the mower would not run. The belts were loose and I could not figure out how tighten. There are three belts altogether.
It is a Troy built 17hp mower 42 inch deck.
If anyone can tell me get it moving I would appreciated it.

My opinion is that the drive belt will go from pulley to pulley and it will always be tight. Engine to transmission

Another belt would engage the blades, it will have an idler pulley that will swing against it and make it tight and start the blades turning

The third belt would be on the deck and connect the blades, with 3 belts on your mower, I would say it would always be tight too. It would be that way before you install the deck under the mower and the engaging belt would have to be routed during that procedure.

You must find a manual with the belt diagrams.

I forgot this could be a manual transmission. You could have a clutch or handle that swings a pulley over to tighten the belt for drive. Your drive belt is missing that pulley. IMO

See the new thread "Model 4658x92 manual". It sounds like a similar problem to yours with a found solution.

Seems as it may be a variable speed system. Is MTD making Troy Built too.

Yes, MTD is building TroyBilt. Go to their website with your model numbers and download a manual, which will have the routing diagram.

In the deck removal process look to see if you removed a belt tension spring that's necessary for the variable speed system to work as designed.

Ya'll come back now, we're interested, and don't be embarrassed to tell us where you screwed up. We've all done it, even me.

Thanks for the response. Some one on this site post how to get it moving. I don't remember exactly how to do it. But from I can remember they said--put in a low gear turn the ignition on and then move it to a higher gear. Not sure of the correct procedure

Is there a way to look up old posts?

My thanks to all that assisted me. The reason I kept asking about finding past posts/messages I was trying to find out how far back I could look at my past messages. What I was hoping to find was the answer to a post I had made last fall.

Thanks
