I just went through similar symptoms on a cv730 equipped Craftsman. It wouldn't hit full rpm and engaging the blades sputtered out the engine. It didn't have the smart spark system, but this mower's problem was not spark related.
Even though the carb had been cleaned, ultimately it needed to be replaced. On the first test run it would run great for about 15 minutes, then fall on it's face and only make it back to the shop on full choke. In the end, the fuel pump also had to be replaced to bring everything up to proper running spec.
