My dads craftsman dgt 6000 just started running very sluggishly with blades engaged and disengaged. I took the air filter off and am getting a pretty heavy misting of fuel from carb and some backfiring/popping. It runs smooth in "tortoise" mode, but will not get up to the proper rpm to run the blades efficiently. Any ideas??

Lets start with what engine you have in that mower complete with model number information. that way we know if it is a Briggs, Kohler, Kawasaki, Subaru, Honda, Yamaha, Tecumseh, Lauson, LCT, Loncin, powermore, Rato, Generac,

Better wait for the model and spec, Kohler pro could be a Command or a Courage. And depending on year could have one of about 4 types of ignition systems.

This could be carb related and could need cleaned. But due to the spark advance system. Could also be related to a timing problem due to failure of the DSAM

Okay, my first thought was carb. Im no small engine mechanic so what is a DSAM? Like I said before it was running fine for about 30 mins then kaboom it bogged down and wont get past 2000-2200 rpm. Theres a green section on the tach at 3000. Im assuming thats the proper rpm. I can move the throttle level to full and it just stays low. All throttle linkages are working and moving freely. Seems to get worse the more gas you give it. Seems like its getting way too much fuel. Or like you said a timing issue. starts right up and runs like a top at low speed.

I would start by removing the carb and giving it a good cleaning, and then see what happens. the DSAM stands for digital spark advance module

the Kohler dealers have been through three different spark advance systems. the ASAM which is analog spark advance module, the DSAM which I already discussed and the latest and greatest is the DSAI Digital spark advance ignition.

Sounds like either the needle valve isn't closing all the way, which is the most likely. the main high speed jet has come loose, or something has clogged the air bleed.
