mower vs: field mower vs: brush hog ???

My Dad's been mowing 7 acres at Cape Cod... it's a nice field but it's not a groomed lawn. Kinda bumpy but not too bad. He gets the job done in 8 hours with a Cub Cadet low boy 154? 70 inch middle deck. If he gets to it regularly everything is fine.

The Problem: if it gets too long, he doesnt want to leave the clippings down. Then he uses a zero turn with vacuum... it shakes the bajeebers out of him and wipes him out. Question? Can he use the middle mower and attach a field mower or something else to the rear PTO? Will the combination of both cut the clippings small enough to leave down??

I've never owned a 154, but I've looked at a few over the years. All the ones I've seen only have one PTO, and it is used to drive the belly mower. Does it have a long belt that goes to the back of the tractor? I bet it does. As far as I know, they don't have a mid PTO, but then again I could be wrong. If it only has the one PTO, then using a trailing mower isn't an option unless it has it's own power source, as in the case with a Swisher.

You could go with a pull behind trail mower.

mullins87 - you are totally correct. no rear pto, just the long belt that drives the belly mower. Also, he has a 184 that does have the rear pto but it runs in reverse if that doesn't just take the cake!! Apparently the converters are hard to come by.

Carscw - Thanks for the info - after thinking about it more... the mower blows out the side so a pull behind wont cut it a second time. Looking into some type of vacuum?? Might end up with a new tractor!!

You can move it to what ever side you like.
I have Seen some on graigslist for under $1000
I have never used one but looks like it would be fun

Might get a Ferris dealer to bring one out for a demo. Shouldn't beat him up.
