I am going to guess the recoil spring broke. Take the recoil apart. put a little heat on the end of the spring that broke off and bend a new hook into it. put together and tighten about 6 or so turns. Not a bad job to do. Or buy a new or used recoil or bring your recoil to repair shop and have it fixed. I get 2 or 3 bad recoils a year to repair in my shop from broken ropes or springs.
