I have a Murray Mower with Briggs & Stratton engine that is hard to start, cutting out, and blowing smoke. I changed the head gasket and it has not fixed the problem. Basically after a few seconds after starting, the engine dies down and then picks up while blowing white smoke from the muffler. The area around the muffler got very hot also. Any thoughts on the problem?

Check your oil. Is it over full and smell like gas?
Which engine what mower how many hours or years ?
You treat a baby with a cough a little different to a 90 year old with a cough.
Engines are somewhat similar.
Blowing white smoke is burning oil.
