Might try squirting some carburetor cleaner into the intake area with the air filter removed. If it hits and tries to start you've got a fuel problem. Take off the carburetor bowl and see if fuel is flowing. Even new carbs can have an inlet needle stuck causing the gas flow to stop. Check for obstructions from the tank to the carb inlet. Hope this helps.

I second Dave's recommendation on carb cleaner. I use Sea Foam aerosol - it is good stuff.

First thing have you got a spark..? also check two vents under metal ring of fuel cap and vent in top, center of cap, clean cap and vents in nonflammable solvent and allow cap to dry, then install the cap.

Hello
My son in law Bought the very same Mower from our Local John Deere dealership about Four Year's ago, and it never wanted to start up Easily Or run right. He had it back to them Three time's and it still did not want to start up and run right. I spoke with the mechainic and he shared with me that these new EPA compliant Carburetor's are way Too lean, Thus The Annoying Hard start or quiting when they are first started up. He went on to say that they Had No Cure for it. I felt bad as I told my Son in law to buy the John Deere mower, so I Located him an Old School Lawn-Boy 2-cycle mower that he fell in love with. He sold his John Deere mower and got most of his Money back out of it, but he will Not buy any More Mower's with the Briggs & Stratton engine on them. Since I located him his first lawn-Boy 2-cycle mower he has added two more to his mowing Fleet just because he like's them and they run strong. I have worked on Lawn Mower's for better than 30 Year's and the classic 2-cycle Lawn-Boy Mower's are my Favorite. If they have their Pre-Mix done to a 50-1 Ratio they run clean and strong. We are a full Blown Lawn-Boy Loyal family as I myself have a Commercial Model Lawn-Boy self Propelled mower that you can not kill. These new small gas engine's are all having issue's on durability as well as Not running good. The Issue Lies at the EPA compliant carburetor's. The Federal Government Banned Lawn Mower 2-cycle engine's in 2002 saying that they run dirty. One thing I know is that my Dirty Running Lawn-Boy keep's on going and it is close to 20 Year old, and it has an adjustable Carburetor on it that I can adjust and make my engine run Good, Unilke the new Non Adjustable one's so New is not always' better in my mind. I agree with everything the above post says about the new EPA carbs. They are too lean, don't run right, and due to the lean condition don't produce as much power, and run hotter. I wonder what the 2014 standards will bring to mowers. The other down side to the EPA carbs, are there is no way to adjust for different qualities of fuel. I think things are going to get worse not better. I also see EFI becoming more standard. The problem with EFI is going to be that unless you are an authorized dealer, you won't be able to get the test equipment to diagnose problems. So your local repair guy that you love may be able to work on Kohler, but may not have the equipment to test, or repair your Kaw engine.
