When considering, zero turn mowers, with the larger petrol engines, 27 hp and up, which tend to be quieter;
  • Kawasaki ?
  • Kohler ?
  • Honda ?
  • Briggs & Stratton (Vanguard) ?

Yes I always use ear protection - Crazy if you don't unless reread profoundly deaf.

Still, given the option, I would like to start with quieter mower.

From Google;

"...... the Vanguard Big Block (810cc to 993cc) is widely considered the quietest and smoothest running engine in its class. [1, 2]
    • The Evidence: Decibel testing reveals a noticeable difference. For instance, in head-to-head real-world tracking, a Vanguard 40 hp EFI engine registered 96.8 dBA, compared to a Kawasaki 35 hp engine at 100.6 dBA. Because decibels are logarithmic, this 3.8 dB drop represents an audible reduction in volume."

This is like asking which engine is quieter when not running....

And don't forget every 3 db increase is the doubling of the noise. And 3 db reduction is halving the noise level.

But for engines most noise is from the exhaust which can improved by using better mufflers.

I didn't know that there are muffler choice options when it comes to mowers ? - please elaborate.

May be you are referring to aftermarket options? What's are available ?- again please elaborate

I suggest you focus on reliability more than which one is quieter. Ear plugs are cheap.

These engines are made for working, not vanity.

Vanity??? Where on earth did you get that stupid statement from???

Reliability?? - exhaust noise is totally unrelated to the service life of the engine (assuming the nose is not indicative of a problem) - another "left of field comment".

Engine/exhaust noise is, for the most part wasted energy. If you don't have to have it, to an unnecessary high dB, why have it???

Might pay you to think about the noise pollution, you are imposing on your neighbours/population, by operating an unnecessarily noisy machine.

FYI: Have worked in agriculture all my life, been wearing noise attenuating devices all that time.
