Mowing fine had just mowed about 3 acres with Hustler Mini Z. 19hp. kaw. air cooled. It has about 550hrs on it. Have never had a bit of problems and always starts fine. It is the FH601v engine.

1. Blades stopped and motor immediately shut off
2. Blade switch was still engaged so dis-engaged and attempted to restart
3. The starter is visibly trying to crank the motor - I took the shroud off and you can see it trying to move the flywheel
4. The flywheel moves about a half an inch but the motor will not turn over.
5. The motor fins are not plugged the oil is at Full level and is clean just changed it couple mows ago.
6. The motor did not smoke or make any loud noise just shut down after the blades did
7. looked under and do not see anything caught under blades or clutch - I can turn the blades by hand.
8. It acts like the blade clutch is still physically engaged even though blade switch is in the off position.

Questions:
1. Would the flywheel move a half an inch if the motor was seized.
2. Have you ever seen the clutch that engages the blades from the motor stay engaged when the switch is off
3. Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks

As I see it the first thing to do is isolate engine from chassis so you know what you are looking for. I don't know your mower but can't that be done by removing the belts? As far as the flywheel moving a small amount it can still be something inside the engine that let go.

Good suggestion.. I went out and took off both the drive and the deck belts. The motor still seems locked up. When I grab the flywheel and move it still only get it to move a half an inch. I should be able to turn the motor over by hand right?

Yeh, I think so too. I am debating if I tear it apart or let someone who knows what they are doing do it. I don't know that I have the time and patience. I will let yall know.

Thanks

Ok tybilly, you would win the Z trouble shooting contest - if there were one. :drink: Me buying you an imaginary beer.

I had already taken it to the dealer when you posted but.. guess what.. the PTO clutch was locked up and they said caused the starter to also lock up somehow. Not the motor after all.. You asked for the findings so there it is.. thanks for your help.

I didn't have the time to fix it even if I wanted to.

Resurrecting an older thread. Fastrak with 21 HP Kohler. I have already figured out the clutch was bad and removed it. Now have a new one to install. What is the best way to do this? Appears that it needs to be pressed on and I should probably take the engine off the mower. Is there a good tool to use so I don't have to pull the engine and be able to install from underneath? Thanks.
