I have just replaced my old Voltage regulator with a new replacement, and on checking the earth connection from the regulator metal body( it's mounted on the plastic shield supporting the oil dip stick) back to the Ground there is a voltage leak of 0.26v when the motor is switched off and key removed.
I'm sure this will drain the battery while the machine is standing idle, can i say to the seller of the Voltage regulator it is faulty as there shouldn't be any leakage, and it needs replaced?.

Yes it will slowly drain the battery as it connected in the circuit as it receives 12v all the time. This voltage regulator 12v output must be switched off in order to prevent this. This is a common wiring across many OEMs wiring.

I haven't found the keyswitch layout (pinout) in order suggest a rewire correction.
 
I wouldn't be concerned about the voltage across the ground since it could be just stray voltage. I would be more interested in the milliamp draw to see how much is being drained. Some drain is normal across a live voltage regulator due to the regulator has to have a small draw in order to work the internals to recharge the battery when running
 
I recommendation battery disconnect switch between your wire and your battery. This isolates the battery so it cannot discharge.

Just connect it and away you go to mow!
 
Thank you to all three. I will test the current drain when i get the opportunity and also the voltage at the battery terminals after a week with the machine standing idle. I 'll post the result when i get it,
It would also be a simple fix to put a spst switch in line with the earth ground wire from the Voltage regulator. I will keep you posted when i get the results.

Tells me the "new" regulator is bad. Diodes are leaking/conducting. Send it back to China.
