I bought a JD 317 mower with a series 2 Kohler engine. Hadn't had any experience with a john deere. Ran rough, so I decided to install new plugs, points, and condenser. Couldn't find timing mark on flywheel, so I pulled #1 plug to check compression. No compression, so pulled head. Valves worked but piston didn't move. I guess it didn't break block and turns over smoothly because oil is still in the engine. I have the engine ready to pull but am wondering where the driveshaft comes apart from the engine.
I am glad I have some mechanical experience, but no purchasing experience. I need a little help as to where the driveshaft comes apart from the engine. :confused2::anyone:

The only manual I have for th 300 series covers the Onan engines
On the 316 & 318 the drive shaft has a bolt on flange at the engine end and a spline with locking spring on the transmission.
Book says to remove engine end by removing 4 bolts from the flange then , drop down & slide off the splines.
Front might be different with the Kohler but rear will be the same as all models had the same transmission.
